Long Night

Back in Tupelo at 2:15 AM CDT, 429 miles. And back through Tishimingo at 9:15 AM CDT, 479 miles.
I've never ridden these distances before. My body seems to be in the groove and is doing okay. My head is holding up too. Only 55 miles to the next control and 140+ to the end. The cutoff time is 7 AM tomorrow.

Kosciusko,MS

329 miles, 3:30 CDT. It's hot and I'm tired. I pulled off at a gas station in Kosciusko, put my head down on a table and fell asleep. Apparently a fellow rider came in and was going to wake me when the lady behind the counter yelled at him,"He ain't bugging us, don't you bug him!" I get to hear this story after I wake up and. buy some ice cream. Slept about an hour and needed it.

Back!

On line, that is. Made it into the French Camp control last night at 2:50 AM CDT, 267 miles. Broke a spoke on the rear wheel after leaving Tupelo and had to do a commando trueing on the side of the road in the dark. It worked well enough to get me in.
There's no service at French Camp, so my update was delayed. Forget riding brevets, I'd ride a bike 100 miles for Internet service. Literally.
Headed for the turnaround point this AM.

Frayed Edge Of The Lunatic Fringe

Gran Fondo in Nashville hosted a meet and greet for the 1000K brevet riders this evening. Then everyone went down the street to eat at an Italian place. In the small world department I sat down with a couple from San Diego who have a house at Hound Ears. Another couple at the table who are married, but not to each other, told me the title to this post. It's how a friend of theirs describes brevet riders.
We start at 4:00 AM.
